2008 has been a challenging year for most companies and a worrying time for just about everyone. I had the following question the other day and I thought I’d share my answer here.

Over the past months, the recession, depression and financial crisis have barely been out of the news.

I was at a networking talk recently on Lean techniques and how they can be applied to non-manufacturing processes. Manufacturing companies, following the thinking of people such as William Deming and Eliyahu Goldratt, realised a long time that costs can be taken out of systems by ensuring that waste is kept to a minimum and quality is built in to the process.

This company employed Terry Tate as a business coach.

On my bookshelf there are several books on selling. The common approach is to define the benefits of the service in the context of the buyer and then demonstrate how those benefits can help the customer.

Many organisations use third party consultancies to undertake projects that they don't have the time, skills or resources to run themselves. However, many organisations also report poor experiences with using consultancies and avoid them as a result. When used properly an external company can provide extra capacity and specialist skills on demand, which means that the host organisation can be agile and able respond to changing market conditions much faster. In these difficult times this enables host organisations to run lean and to gain advantage over the competition.
